Introduction

We get different types of rice grown across the world. Generally it seems very easy to cook rice but one has to take little bit of precaution for cooking rice of different types because they take different amount of water to get cooked well. Rice comes in three types of grains, short grain, medium grain and long grain.

White rice is milled to remove the outer husk, the bran and the germ. It is less nutritious that that of brown rice but can be stored longer and gets cooked fast.

The time depends on the type of rice. Generally it varies from 10 to 40 minutes.

Method to Cook rice

riceWhite rice is refined and polished to a great extent and need not be washed before cooking. The basmati rice or other types of rice need washing or soaking into water for some time before cooking so that extra starch could be removed.

For cooking long-grained white rice, put 1 cup of rice into 1 and ½ cups of water in a pot with a tight cover. Boil the water using high heat and you would find steam coming out from under the cover. The pot has to be kept covered and you should not peep under the lid. Use a glass lid if you are novice. Now reduce the heat and keep it low. You will find the rice grains swelling as they absorb water. Do not keep the heat too high because the bottom of the pot with scorch but the rice in the top will remain undercooked. You must simmer the rice for 20 minutes.  Now remove the cover and using a fork fluff the rice so that the grains are separated. To cook basmati rice, you have to put 1 cup of rice to 3 cups of water. Boil the water then reduce the heat and simmer for about 45 minutes. Let the rice stand and keep it covered for 10 minutes before serving.

Cooking rice for pilaf dishes is also very easy. You have to saute rice in oil so that the grains remain separated when you are cooking rice. Stir the rice for 2-3 minutes and when they turn translucent it is ready for pilaf making. Now add the cooking liquid for making rice pilafs.
